# Update a USB drive

Update existing Foundry USB media when configuration or runtime content changes.

## Before updating

* Confirm that the selected drive is Foundry deployment media.
* Confirm that required offline cache content is stored outside the boot partition that Foundry updates.
* Close applications that may be using files on the USB drive.
* Review the current configuration because the update uses the active Foundry OSD settings.

## Update the drive

1. Connect the existing Foundry USB drive.
2. Open **Start** and select the correct target.
3. Confirm Foundry recognizes the drive as existing Foundry media.
4. Resolve readiness items.
5. Select **Update USB**. Foundry refreshes the boot partition while preserving the cache partition.
6. Keep the drive connected until the update completes.
7. Test boot the updated media before production use.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.foundryosd.com/foundry-osd/media/update-usb.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
